How Cities Can Improve Their Energy

This may not make the headlines even though it is a significant need of our modern cities. To encourage the growth of cities and see real growth, the issue of energy must not be taken lightly. What cities should look into is how to reduce the amount of energy consumed by heating, lighting, and cooling of buildings. This is the only way to achieve overall climate goals. According to two reports, recommendations are made to help city leaders think of practical ways to build their cities and formulate policies toward the same goal.

The World Resources Institute (WRI) has recommended for local authorities to take the issue of building seriously. The 8-action plan which is to revolutionize the structure of cities focuses on making decisions with a long-term effect on buildings. The eight recommendations are given below:

Codes and Standard for Building

Creating buildings which are similar in structure will help reduce and control the amount of energy used by each building in the city. This aspect covers the design, operation, and construction of the projects. The advantage of this recommendation is that property owners will spend less and save more in setting up a building.

Energy Efficiency Focus and Transparent Records

City leaders can set limits on the amount of energy each building should consume. The policy should be strictly followed to ensure compliance. Mandatory disclosure of what each building in the city consumes on a daily, weekly or monthly basis can be put in place. The results will help property owners, managers, residents, and city leaders to make a better decision to use energy efficiently.

Financial Motivation

The city can use the approach of encouraging the city people through mortgage, grants, bonds, rebate, and loans. It is a way of cushioning the problems associated with implementing the building efficiency program to make the people readily receptive to government policies.

Setting Examples

City leaders or government can begin projects that follow the policy on energy efficiency strictly.  Pilot projects or government buildings can be used as examples to build confidence and trust in the people. The private sector should not be left out in campaigning for reduced energy consumption in cities.

Competition and Reward

Government or city leaders can use competition, awards, and rewards to encourage the people to follow the guidelines for fuel efficiency in the space or home. Dialogue should be encouraged among the people to spread awareness of government policy.

Education and Training

Programs should be organized to train stakeholders in the latest energy reduction skills. Apart from that, financial institutions should get involved by making sure investment terms are not too difficult for the average stakeholder.

Partnership

The local government can create more significant information storage through partnering with local agencies. The alliance will provide a more reliable and efficient data for planning and decision making on energy efficiency and reduction.

The above recommendations are to help city leaders keep away from making decisions that will defeat the energy sector and reduced energy consumption. Through right policies and adequate follow up, energy efficiency can be implemented in cities.
